Daniel Reid

Executive Director

Daniel Reid oversees the Foundation’s humanities program, overall strategy, and operations. Prior to joining Whiting, Daniel provided strategic consulting to cultural and other nonprofit institutions such as UNESCO, the Illinois Humanities Council, and the Gates Foundation; helped launch the CUNY Institute for Education Policy; and worked as an acquisitions editor at Other Press. He is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and a graduate of the University of Virginia and Yale Law School.

 

Courtney Hodell

Director of Writers’ Programs

Courtney Hodell oversees the Whiting Awards and related programs to support writers. She has worked as a literary editor for publishers including Viking Penguin, HarperCollins, and Random House, as publishing director at Fourth Estate in the UK, and most recently as an executive editor at Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. Writers she has worked with include Michael Chabon, Edmund de Waal, Arthur Miller, Mary Karr, Amitav Ghosh, Carol Shields, and Wells Tower. Courtney holds a BS from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

 

Adina Applebaum

Program Assistant

Adina Applebaum supports the Foundation across our literature and humanities programs. Prior to joining Whiting, she worked as an intern at One Story and Catapult. Adina graduated from Barnard in 2015 with a degree in English and Creative Writing.

 

Matt Herzfeld

Research and Web Assistant

Matt Herzfeld assists the Foundation with its website and various research projects. In addition to his work with Whiting, Matt is a playwright. He graduated from Columbia in 2010, and received an MFA in Playwriting from the New School for Drama in 2014.
